Jake Schutter: Northern Michigan Cross-Training

STORY:

Michigan has not only the most freshwater access in the country, but it also has some of the best ATV and UTV trails available. As an active family, we love to combine the two sports sometimes! Houghton Lake is one of the largest inland lakes available. It’s also centrally located in the trail system. Some of the best times to explore Michigan in the woods and the water are after Labor Day. It’s considered the off-season, so lodging and rental options are very reasonable. Plus, the leaves are changing at that time, which makes it that much better! We love our inflatable stand up paddle boards (iSUPs). We have owned multiple boards in the past and would not go back to a rigid board. I personally cannot tell a difference in performance between the two. My explorer is lightweight and very durable and stable. At 6’6” and 250 pounds, I need a board that can handle some abuse. My wife loves the soft deck pad on her board as well as the adjustable paddle. Thanks, guys. We are planning some winter paddle board trips with the possibility of some snowmobiles.

PRO TIPS:

Tip 1. Screw your metal fin holder into your fin for storage. It helps you to not lose it

Tip 2. Leave the middle section of your paddle connected to the top for storage. Just shrink it down.

Tip 3. Leave your board somewhat loose in bag so that you can slide pump and paddle inside board after putting it in bag. It make it easier to zip up.
